BSG & Firefly

February 28, 2011 — Leave a comment

My lovely girlfriend has recently finished watching Firefly. She has now moved onto the next great space-faring epic on the list from recent years: Battlestar Galactica.

Both of these shows truly exemplarize what pulp inspired stories can attain. They’re both wonderful character and plot-driven series. I feel privileged to be forced to watch them again.

As my friend Robert Penson, author of “Goodnight Hero” (Twit Publishing Presents: PULP! Summer/Fall 2010), said: “If there weren’t great characters in Battlestar, it would just be about fighting killer robots in outer space.”

But, that’s the thing: Really amazing stories tell us about ourselves through the lens of others’ experiences. And great stories make those others come to life.

I’ll have a better blog later this week, before my brother and I roll down to STAPLE! Austin.
